Abu Dhabi, Friday, June 12, 2026 – Australian paddler Ellecia Saffron successfully completed the full circumnavigation of Abu Dhabi Island, covering more than 60 kilometres after setting off on her journey at 3:25 a.m. and reaching the finish line at 12:00 noon. She completed the challenge in approximately eight hours and 35 minutes of continuous paddling.
The challenge was organized by the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Maritime and in coordination with the Coast Guard and the Naval Forces, with a comprehensive safety and support system in place to ensure the success of the event and the security of the entire route.
Saffron's journey took her around Abu Dhabi Island, passing several of the emirate’s most prominent maritime and cultural landmarks, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat Island, Lulu Island, and the Eastern Mangroves, while overcoming strong sea currents, headwinds, and rising temperatures.
Having called Abu Dhabi home for the past 19 years, Saffron said the challenge was more than a test of physical endurance. It was a journey that reflected her sense of belonging and appreciation for the city that has welcomed her and whose growth and development she has witnessed over nearly two decades.
She explained that successfully completing the challenge required careful planning and continuous energy management throughout the journey, particularly as sea and wind conditions changed during the day. Maintaining a steady pace, she noted, was key to reaching the finish safely and successfully.
The challenge forms part of the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club’s ongoing efforts to support unique sporting initiatives and promote marine sports culture, further reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global destination for major maritime and endurance events.
The event also demonstrated close cooperation among the organizing and supporting entities, including Abu Dhabi Maritime, the Coast Guard, and the Naval Forces, ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational excellence throughout the challenge.
